Achenbach System of Empirically Based Assessment (ASEBA®)

The ASEBA is an evidence-based framework for assessing adaptive and maladaptive functioning. It utilises a multi-informant approach, combining quantitative scores with narrative descriptions to provide a comprehensive view of an individual’s behavioural and emotional patterns.

Assessment forms are available by age group:

• Preschool (1.5–5 yrs): CBCL (Parent), LDS (Language Development), and C-TRF (Caregiver/Teacher).

• School-Age (6–18 yrs): CBCL (Parent), YSR (Youth Self-Report, ages 11+), and TRF (Teacher).

• Adult (18–59 yrs): ABCL (Observer) and ASR (Self-Report).

• Older Adult (60–90+ yrs): OABCL (Observer) and OASR (Self-Report).

ASSESSMENT SCALES

All forms evaluate Empirically Based Syndrome Scales and DSM-5 Oriented Scales. Common areas include:

• Internalizing: Anxious/Depressed, Withdrawn, and Somatic Complaints.

• Externalizing: Aggressive Behaviour and Rule-Breaking/Conduct Problems.

• Cognitive/Behavioral: Attention Problems and Thought Problems.

• Specific Adult Scales: Adaptive Functioning (Work, Family, Social), Substance Use, and Dementia/Memory (Older Adults).

AREAS OF APPLICATION

• Child/Youth: Mental health, education, family services, and forensic settings.

• Adult: Therapeutic planning, substance abuse intervention, and forensic contexts.

• Older Adult: Medical care (post-stroke/illness), evaluation of life transitions (grief/assisted living), and psychological evaluations.

REPORT OPTIONS

The ASEBA-Web System generates Individual Profile Reports that integrate numerical data and narrative insights from multiple informants into a single interpretive document.
