Murphy-Meisgeier Type Indicator for Children® (MMTIC®)

A self-report measure to determine psychological type preferences in children and adolescents, which provide valuable insights into differences in how they learn and engage in healthy social interactions.

Murphy-Meisgeier Type Indicator for Children® (MMTIC®) logo

The Murphy-Meisgeier Type Indicator for Children (MMTIC) is specifically engineered, normed, and validated for the youth. It uses the same four-letter Jungian preferences (E/I, S/N, T/F, J/P) but frames them entirely around how young people learn, socialize, and manage stress.

The MMTIC reports are utilised for several vital developmental reasons such as:

  1. Identifying a child's unique learning style by providing concrete insights into a student's natural cognitive processing:

  • The Extraverted vs. Introverted Learner: Identifies whether a student needs to "talk to think" (verbal processing in groups) or "think to talk" (requiring quiet reflection time before participating).

  • The Sensing vs. Intuitive Learner: Pinpoints whether a child learns best through concrete, hands-on, real-world examples (Sensing), or through imaginative stories, abstract concepts, and big-picture patterns (Intuition).

  1. Decrease academic friction and behaviour problems. Many behavioural issues in the classroom or at home stem from a mismatch between an adult's management style and a child's natural disposition.

  • The "Judging" Teacher vs. the "Perceiving" Student: A highly structured teacher or parent might view a Perceiving child’s flexible, last-minute bursts of energy as laziness or defiance. The MMTIC reframes this behavior neutrally, helping adults understand that the child is energized by spontaneity and needs help breaking large tasks into smaller, adaptable milestones.

  • Neutral, Positive Language: Crucially, the MMTIC does not label children as "good" or "bad"; instead, it provides a positive, non-judgmental vocabulary for why children act the way they do.

  1. Prevents early-stage burnout and stress. Children experience stress differently based on their personality type. The MMTIC helps practitioners and parents recognise early warning signs of stress before they manifest as anxiety or academic withdrawal:

  • A young Feeling (F) type may absorb classroom or family tension deeply, requiring explicit emotional reassurance to feel secure.

  • A young Thinking (T) type might become uncharacteristically argumentative or hyper-critical when overwhelmed, needing logical explanations and objective fairness to reset.

  1. It formulates tailored study and homework strategies by providing highly practical, age-appropriate toolkits. The results generate specific advice for:

  • How the child should set up their physical homework space.

  • How to study for tests (e.g., flashcards for Sensing types vs. mind-mapping for Intuitive types).

  • How to manage time without causing intense family or classroom conflict.

ASSESSMENT SCALES

The MMTIC instrument determines preferences on four scales:

  • Extraversion – Introversion

  • Sensing - Intuition

  • Thinking - Feeling

  • Judging -Perceiving

AREAS OF APPLICATION

REPORT OPTIONS

The following software reports are available:

  • Student Report: reports the four psychological type preferences of the student, as well as the response consistency for each preference. The report includes type specific information related to strengths and stretches, as well as suggestions for studying and working with others.

  • Verified Report: can be generated after the type verification process has been completed, and used if the student and adult administrator agree that the MMTIC scored results do not accurately reflect the students verified psychological type.

  • Professional Report: for school counsellors or psychologists, teachers of special needs students, or those adults interested in learning more about the individual development of a particular student.

  • Professional Verified Type Report: for school counsellors or psychologists, teachers, or adults. This report can be generated after the type verification process has been completed and the student and adult administrator agree that the MMTIC reported type results do not accurately reflect the student's verified psychological type.

  • Career Report: based on information for each of the 16 personality types. The report helps students narrow their career interests and provides activities and information related to specific opportunities for them to explore, while keeping their type, skills, interests and values in mind.

  • Test Preparation Report: this report is most useful for high school, and even university, students, with outputs that provide students with insights into how to listen, process, study and respond on tests, based on their type-based strengths, challenges and stressors.
